We’re committed to reducing our carbon footprint through more efficient modes of transport. We take a phased approach to sustainability, step by step we’re making a positive impact on our environment.
We believe in actions rather than words. Our port is leading the charge in bringing the shipping sector closer to a more sustainable way of operating. Every step we take, no matter how small, is aimed at bringing us closer to meeting global emissions targets.
Our Environmental Policy includes managing our Ships Waste Reception facilities to the highest standard, reducing our energy usage, managing product/cargo run-off on the quays, and utilising new technologies to best advantage. We have obtained EcoMerit and ISO 14001 environmental certifications and we are an active partner of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, SEAI. As part of this process, various projects are being undertaken to monitor and reduce consumption.
Port of Waterford is a member of the “EcoPorts” Network, which is administered by the European Sea Ports Organisation (EPSO). The EcoPort Port Environmental Review System (PERS) has become established over the past 20 years as the only port specific Environmental Management standard and has been implemented to date by 23 ports throughout Europe. Port of Waterford have successfully retained our certification following a detailed scrutiny of our environmental management system, including our documentation and records. Our PERS application and supporting documentation were independently reviewed by LRQA Nederland B.V., and the successful outcome reflects the strength of our environmental management practices and ongoing commitment to sustainability.
