New Wave for Offshore Energy
Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment Darragh O’Brien has announced the provisional results of the ORESS Tonn Nua auction, selecting Helvick Head Offshore Wind DAC (a joint venture between ESB and Ørsted) as the successful developer for Ireland’s next major offshore wind project.
Located off the Waterford coast, the Tonn Nua site (“New Wave”) will deliver 900 MW of clean renewable energy, enough to power nearly one million homes and prevent 1.8 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.
This project marks a major step forward in Ireland’s offshore renewable energy journey and a vote of confidence in the South East Coast’s potential.
It also represents significant future opportunities for regional ports, supply chains, and coastal communities as Ireland builds the infrastructure to deliver large-scale offshore generation.
At Port of Waterford, we welcome this milestone as part of a wider vision for sustainable growth, supporting Ireland’s transition to a low-carbon future.
