Retirement of our senior crane driver Derek O’Hanlon, after 46 years service!

Our senior crane driver Derek O’Hanlon has retired after an incredible 46 years service!

Derek has given incredible service to the Waterford Port, who along with his colleagues, were the driving force of containerisation in Ireland, something we are very proud of.

Derek joined Bell Lines in August 1978 and moved to crane driving duties in 1980. In the intervening years, Derek has lifted a couple of million containers.

Derek received a Waterford Crystal ships decanter from Port CEO David Sinnott, on behalf of Port of Waterford.

The O’Hanlon name continues with his brother Gavin, and Gavin’s son Michael, also crane drivers, who are keeping the tradition of containers moving, day and night.

We wish Derek and his family the very best in his retirement.
