Port of Waterford secures major planning approval
November 11th 2002

The Port of Waterford has secured approval from An Bord Pleanala to complete an ambitious development plan for the port.

Commenting following An Bord Pleanala's adjudication Peter Foley, Chief Executive Officer of the Port of Waterford Company said that 'this is terrific news for the port, it means that we can now concentrate on putting in place the planned port infrastructure aimed at providing enhanced and new services for existing and new port customers'.

'The Board of the Port of Waterford has implemented a strategy of concentrating port activities in a new facility at Belview which has modern, dedicated infrastructural components and top class connections. The state of the art port at Belview, Co Kilkenny is seven miles from Waterford City. This places us in a position of major strategic advantage versus competitor ports as environmental concerns allied to city congestion increasingly impact on port operations elsewhere. The key piece of our further development plans was to satisfy planning requirements. We are delighted to have completed this. The Board has invested in excess of €750,000 as part of this process that involved a comprehensive oral hearing phase earlier in the year

The Port will continue its policy of working closely with all users of the river and our neighbours as we go forward. This approval allows us to engage with surety with customers as the uncertainty surrounding planning is removed.

The development plans allow for greater quay space, introduction of roll on / roll off capacity, warehousing and improved infrastructure. Our customers are increasingly concerned with speed of port access and supply chain considerations such as customer driven port operations and the availability of adjacent land for distribution centres etc. The Port of Waterford is 100% focussed on meeting these needs. The package we can now offer in Belview is second to none.

This approval follows the news that work on the second bridge and Waterford City bypass will shortly commence, these developments will further improve access to the port.'

Port of Waterford supports North Quays Redevelopment Plan
October 11th 2002
The Chairman of the Port of Waterford Mr Ben Gavin today confirmed that the Port, the primary landowner of the North Quays, was fully behind the ambitious plans to transform the City of Waterford.

'The Port has for a number of years pursued a strategy of transferring port related activities to it's state of the art facility downstream at Belview. Freeing up the North Quays was the last leg of our plans set out by former CEO John Clancy. Our vision was always directed at realising the potential of the North Quays as a fully rounded civic / residential area. As the instigators of this project we believe that this is truly a great day.

We applaud the tremendous efforts of the Office of Public Works, Waterford City Council and Ministers Cullen and Parlon in getting us to this stage. The winning entry is fantastic, the city's waterfront will have a completely new and vibrant life.

The Port's Board and the management team led by CEO, Peter Foley are keen to enter into meaningful discussions with OPW on the disposal and development of the site. The resolution of this issue will enable us to programme with certainty the replacement facilities that will be required at Belview and to make this design happen quickly.'
