Inspring local second level studentsPosted: November 5 2019
Port of Waterford are delighted to continue our support for students in secondary schools relevant to Port of Waterford, located on the estuary through a partnership with Junior Achievement Ireland. We have 7 volunteers who inspired and motivated 52students in 2 schools in Waterford.
In term 1 of the 18/19 school year we hosted a successful "School to Work Day" titled ‘Success Skills for the Workplace’ at their offices with 27, 5th year students from Abbey Community College, from nearby Ferrbank. The JAI workshops covered three key areas, teamwork, communication and interview skills.
"On behalf of the 5th year LCVP group and myself I would like to sincerely thank you for arranging such a really interesting and relevant visit to the Port of Waterford. The students have benefitted greatly by the visit now they have an abundance of relevant material to prepare a Summary Report for their LCVP Portfolio.”

In another session, staff members Brian Moore, Lorraine Casey, Darren Doyle and Ian Moriarty each shared their own career paths with the students from Waterpark College. Students gained an understanding of effective communication and learned the importance of feedback and the importance of first impressions e.g. students took part in a role play which allowed them to practice verbal and non-verbal communication.
“I enjoyed hearing about the different jobs that people had like the Captains job and also Lorraine who told us about health and safety.”
